As the U.S. ramps up its military presence in southern Afghanistan, Canada will lose its already tentative place as a decisionmaker.

On Jan. 17, I was invited by the National Press Club and Canadian Association of Journalists to participate in a panel discussion on Afghanistan at Carleton University in Ottawa. My fellow presenters were Graeme Smith of the Globe and Mail, and Murray Brewster of the Canadian Press, both of whom have extensive experience reporting from Kandahar.
