Silence Can Be Golden, Says New Swiss Ambassador

In the late 1970s, Werner Baumann, Switzerland's new Ambassador to Canada, was a young attaché at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris when he attended a party to which Mary McCarthy, a famous American writer, was also invited. Still new to the diplomatic cocktail routine and unsure of what to do when in the presence of eminent strangers, the young diplomat found himself in an awkward situation.
