Conservative yet classy is the key to looking good at a diplomatic party, where a few subtle details like accessories and shoes can make all the difference.

Although red is back in a big way for this fall's fashions, not everyone can get away with wearing a solid crimson gown to a diplomatic party. Go subtle and classic instead if you don't feel comfortable wearing something too bold, says Liz Timlin, a Holt Renfrew personal shopper. Women can pair red lipstick with a simple dark dress or a neat skirt suit. "Red is the highlight of the season," Ms. Timlin says.
