Three years ago, Selwyn Das made his first trip to Canada from his home in Malaysia, in a ritual that thousands of Canadian parents duplicate every year. His son was a first-year university student, off to study at Carleton University in Ottawa. For the first time, after 18 years of watching him grow into the young adult that he hoped he would become, Mr. Das was leaving him behind. He was worried as a parent, but he was not worried about where his son would be living.
