Ever since the civil war in 1949, China has claimed Taiwan as its territory, and threatened to invade if Taiwan attempts to fully exercise its independence. The Middle Kingdom has also bristled when other countries have recognized the island's legitimacy, insisting on recognition of one true China as a precondition for bilateral relations.
