Before Afghanistan, before Homeland Security, before Iraq, before the "war on terror," there were those early days following Sept. 11, 2001. The world felt as if it actually had changed as a great depth and breath of empathy for Americans found a voice all over the world. It was the deepest change imaginable, one that reformist political leaders always hope for, but seldom achieve. It was a change of heart.
