ANKARA, Turkey-—On Oct. 3, Kurdish guerrillas based in northern Iraq launched a bold, cross-border daylight attack against a remote Turkish outpost. After a bloody five-hour firefight, 17 Turkish soldiers were killed and another 20 wounded before airstrikes and artillery drove the Kurds back into the mountains. It was estimated that as many as 300 members of the PKK (Kurdish Workers Party) took part in the assault, and the Turks claim to have killed 25 of them in the battle.
