Unification Would Be Risky Business

As I personally explained to Gwynne Dyer last October, the indications that Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez could have been considering a swift unification of Cuba and Venezuela under one authoritarian state were deeply troubling (Re: "Could Chavez Succeed Castro?" Aug. 9). For the Cuban people and the governing elite that would succeed Fidel Castro, embarking on such an adventure would carry many risky implications.
