For over 225 years, citizens of the United States have appreciated and celebrated the events associated with July 4, 1776. From this day forward, instead of being one with British North America, we became definitively un-Canadian. And beneath the rhetorical bombast, the super-duper sales, the extravaganza of fireworks and backyard barbeques, there is an essential patriotism associated with Independence Day. The appreciation of and pride in the United States is not lessened by distance.
