Ecuador's Democracy Tested Again

Ecuador's Ambassador to Canada, His Excellency Alejandro Suárez, said during a radio interview April 20 that "Ecuadorians have turned the deposing of presidents into a national sport." The fact of having had nine different presidents over the last decade seems to prove him right. After weeks of street demonstrations, the National Congress voted to oust President Lucio Gutiérrez, swearing in Vice-President Alfredo Palacio as his replacement. Mr. Palacio's only previous government experience was as Health Minister for two years a long time ago.
