Canadian universities lag significantly compared to their U.S. counterparts in the realization of value for their inventions and, once a technology is developed in these establishments, it is very difficult to de-institutionalize it. Canada has significant experience of this situation (i.e. many new spin-off companies have been created over the last 25 years), but the value generation has generally been poor.
