Targeted Research Funding Needed, Regardless of Source

Private sector funding is good for commercial success and government investment is better for certain industries, but ultimately, experts say, funds should be focused in areas Canada can excel.

The private sector is the biggest financier of research and development in Canada, and it's a similar story in many industrialized nations. Figures from Statistics Canada show that $28.4 billion was invested in research and development last year, of which 56 per cent was from the private sector. The federal government invested 18 per cent, while provincial governments invested six per cent.
