We should not forget that the first Summit of the Americas was convened by then-president Bill Clinton in Miami from Dec. 9-11, 1994. At the time, the convener of the first-ever meeting of democratically elected heads of government of the Western hemisphere had one main objective in mind, namely the negotiation of a Free Trade Agreement of the Americas.
