Day's Buy American letter panned

The Obama administration and US trade representative aren't the problem or the solution, experts say.

As the Canadian economy continues to struggle and protectionist forces line up in support of Buy American provisions, International Trade Minister Stockwell Day has proposed a compromise. Mr. Day last month sent a letter to US Trade Representative Ron Kirk offering American firms access to Canadian provincial and municipal contracts in exchange for exemptions from the Buy American provisions that became law as part of last February's US stimulus package.
