The Americas have been a centerpiece of Canada's foreign policy since 2007, when the Harper government started embarking on a series of free trade negotiations and significant development projects with countries in the hemisphere. A key part of the re-engagement strategy has been having a dedicated minister touring the region when he or she isn't sitting at the Cabinet table.
