An ancient axiom suggests that once you find yourself in a hole you put down your shovel and start looking for a ladder. Obviously, the advisers to the new Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon missed this bit of wisdom when he was reported to have told the press a few days ago that any change in the government's policy concerning Omar Khadr was "premature." He went on to say legal proceedings were still in progress and "it's our government's intention to follow and respect the process."
