They have lived for 16 months in church sanctuary, awaiting the results of an appeal that they hope will end a pending deportation order.

Hope amid confinement: Timea Daroczi and her daughter Lulu in a playful moment with a slice of watermelon. They have been living in sanctuary in a Toronto church along with Ms. Daroczi’s husband and Lulu’s father Jozsef Pusuma for the past 16 months. Supporters say their refugee hearing failed them because key documents were never translated from Hungarian to English. Now they wait, in hope but in confinement, for an appeal.
