Population changes will breed challenges

New UN projections suggest a growing role in the world economy and its institutions by the rest, not the West.

The world’s population reached seven billion on Oct. 31, 2011. The UN Population Fund erected this banner near UN headquarters in New York at that time. There are now nearly 7.2 billion people on Earth, and that number is projected to hit almost 9.6 billion in 2050.
