Let's hear it for European unity

It is not surprising that serious issues and problems roil the EU from time to time. What is extraordinary is that the mechanisms for co-operation are sufficiently robust.

It has been a difficult few years for the European Union. This unique supra-governmental structure remains as the world’s only serious attempt at regional governance. And despite recent events, it is still standing, and remains as one shining example of what is possible in this badly fractured world.
