The Norwegian Embassy celebrated its National Day on May 17 at the Canadian Museum of History with a family picnic during the day and a gala dinner at night, in honour of the bicentenary of Norway’s constitution.

Israeli Ambassador Rafael Barak and his wife Miriam Barak hosted an Independence Day reception on May 13 at the Chateau Laurier.

Saudi Ambassador Naif Bin Bandir AlSudairy hosted a dinner at his home on May 12 in honour of Foreign Minister John Baird.

The opening of the third Portuguese Language Film Festival took place on May 5 at Library and Archives Canada with the screening of the Portuguese film Amália and a reception. The festival, which ran until May 13, was organized by the Canadian Film Institute and the embassies of Angola, Brazil, Mozambique and Portugal.

The Chinese Embassy hosted a farewell reception for Ambassador Zhang Junsai and his wife, Yin Guomei, at the embassy on April 29. They have since finished their posting.

As part of Asian Heritage Month festivities, Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson at Ottawa City Hall on May 4 proclaimed May 14 as Vesak Day in Ottawa. Buddhists mark the birth, enlightenment and death of Buddha on that day.

Russian Ambassador Georgiy Mamedov hosted a reception at his embassy on May 8 to mark Victory Day in the Second World War.

European Union Ambassador Marie-Anne Coninsx hosted a reception on May 8 at Ottawa City Hall to mark Europe Day.

South African High Commissioner Membathisi Mdladlana hosted a Freedom Day reception at the Chateau Laurier on April 29.
Honduran Ambassador Sofia Cerrato hosted the opening of an exhibition of art by Honduran artists on April 25 at Ottawa City Hall.
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Consular Issues Lynne Yelich was a special guest at a Women Ambassadors of Ottawa luncheon hosted by the Indonesian ambassador on April 29.
From October 2013 until the start of the Commonwealth Games in July 2014 in Glasgow, Scotland, the Queen’s Baton Relay is taking place in 70 countries and territories. The baton kicked off two days in the Ottawa region on April 28 with stops at Rideau Hall and Parliament Hill.

Turkish Ambassador Tuncay Babali hosted a “Music to Dine for” event at his home on April 22 in co-operation with the Friends of the National Arts Centre Orchestra in support of youth music education programs.

The Canadian Federation of University Women’s Ottawa Diplomatic Hospitality Group presented an art show featuring work by Argentine artist Carmen Buteler and music by Ottawa-based Cuban artist Miguel De Armas, on April 25 at the Orange Art Gallery. The Latin morning was catered by René Rodriguez, owner and chef of Navarra Restaurant and Top Chef Canada contestant.

Australian High Commissioner Louise Hand and New Zealand High Commissioner Simon Tucker hosted an ANZAC Day commemorative service at the Canadian War Museum on April 25.

With the coming departure of Greek Ambassador Eleftherios Anghelopoulos and other Greek diplomats, the Greek community in Canada held an event in their honour at the Metropolitan Centre in Toronto on April 24 hosted by the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Toronto.

The launch of the 2014 edition of the Canada for the Diplomatic Community guidebook for diplomats and their families took place at the home of German Ambassador Werner Wnendt on April 24.

Zimbabwean Ambassador Florence Zano Chideya hosted a reception on April 17 at her embassy to mark Zimbabwe’s national day.

The Hungarian Embassy hosted a reception on April 15 at the ambassador’s home to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations with Canada and the 10th anniversary of Hungary’s entry into the European Union, among other anniversaries. 

The ambassador of the Netherlands, Cees Kole, and his wife Saskia Kole-Jordans hosted a reception at Ottawa City Hall on April 23 to mark King’s Day.
