Kamrul Ahsan, high commissioner for Bangladesh, and his wife, Saira Nazneen Ahsan, hosted a cultural event and dinner in celebration of Bangla New Year 1422 at the Richelieu-Vanier Community Centre on May 22.

Brazilian Ambassador Pedro Fernando Brêtas Bastos was made a grand officer of his country’s Order of Aeronautical Merit in a ceremony on May 12. The award is given to people who’ve distinguished themselves in their service to Brazil, and especially through work meriting recognition by the Brazilian air force.

Solomon Azoh-Mbi, high commissioner of Cameroon, and his wife, Mercy Azoh-Mbi, hosted a reception on May 20 at the Chateau Laurier to mark Cameroon’s national day.

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson on May 19 hosted foreign diplomats for a reception at the Horticulture Building at Lansdowne Park to encourage their participation in Ottawa’s commemoration of Canada’s 150th anniversary in 2017. The city is inviting countries to use Lansdowne’s Horticulture Building and Aberdeen Pavilion throughout 2017 to host public events in celebration of their friendship with Canada and their own national milestones.

Norwegian Ambassador Mona Elisabeth Brøther and her spouse, Åsmund Baklien, hosted a garden reception to mark Norway’s national day on May 15 at their home.

Turkish Ambassador Selçuk Ünal hosted the launch reception for the 2015 edition of Canada for the Diplomatic Community, a guide for foreign representatives and their families, at his home on May 6.

Russian Ambassador Alexander Darchiev hosted a ceremony at his embassy on May 9 to mark Victory Day in Russia, the 70th anniversary of the end of the Soviet Union’s Great Patriotic War against Nazi Germany.

Polish Ambassador Marcin Bosacki and his wife, Katarzyna Bosacka, hosted a piano concert by Marek Tomaszewski, followed by a reception, at the Canadian War Museum on May 14 to mark Poland’s national day and the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

European Union Ambassador Marie-Anne Coninsx hosted a reception on May 8 at Ottawa City Hall to mark Europe Day.

The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Toronto and the Canada-Hong Kong Parliamentary Friendship Group hosted a breakfast seminar featuring Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada president and CEO Stewart Beck on May 7 at the Parliamentary Restaurant.

British High Commissioner Howard Drake and his wife, Gill, hosted a reception on May 7 at their home, Earnscliffe, to mark the United Kingdom’s general election that day. Guests watched the results (slowly) roll in as they had their fill of British beverages and food.

Dutch Ambassador Cees Kole awarded NDP MP Peter Stoffer the Dutch honour Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau at a ceremony at Mr. Kole’s home on May 6. Mr. Stoffer, who was born in the Netherlands but immigrated to Canada as a child, has spent much of his parliamentary career promoting Canada-Netherlands friendship.

Kuwaiti Cultural Attaché Fahad AlNaser hosted the opening of the embassy of Kuwait’s Cultural Office on Clarence Street on May 4.

Israeli Ambassador Rafael Barak and his wife, Miriam Barak, hosted a reception at the Chateau Laurier on April 29 to mark Israel’s independence day.

Latin American embassies marked the opening of the 19th Latin American Film Festival with a reception on April 24 at Carleton University. The festival runs until May 9.

New Zealand High Commissioner Simon Tucker and Australian Deputy High Commissioner Adrian Morrison hosted an ANZAC Day centenary service followed by a reception on April 25 at the Canadian War Museum.

The Paraguayan Embassy hosted a classical guitar concert by Berta Rojas on April 21 at the National Arts Centre.

On the occasion of the Canadian launch of Hungary’s chairmanship of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, Hungarian Ambassador Bálint Ódor held a reception on April 16 at his home.
