Quote of the Week

Published: Wednesday, 09/01/2004 12:00 am EDT

We are all waiting for the John Kerry who risked his life to save others, who led the Vietnam Veterans Against the War, who as a young man courageously testified before Congress about the brutality and immorality of our violence toward the Vietnamese people, and who at one time gave as much as he could of himself to help us create a just and human world. Each time we listen to him we are hoping that this earlier John Kerry will emerge through the hologram, the handsome persona, the mouther of stentorian clichés, and by becoming present himself allow us to emerge into a group and become morally present to each other through the mediating role into which history has thrown him.
