Hans Island Agreement

Published: Wednesday, 09/21/2005 12:00 am EDT

Canada and Denmark will seek a long-term peaceful resolution to the dispute over Hans Island, said a joint statement issued by the foreign ministers of both countries at the United Nations on Monday. The island, a small barren piece of land in the Arctic, is claimed by both countries. Both have launched military expeditions to the island to assert authority. In the statement, Pierre Pettigrew, Canada's minister of foreign affairs and his Danish counterpart Per Stig Møller, agreed to inform each other about expeditions either country will launch to the island.
