Prime Minister Paul Martin participated in a video conference with British Prime Minister and current EU President Tony Blair; José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission; and EU High Representative Javier Solana on Nov. 24. The leaders affirmed their unanimity on a gamut of issues beginning with the UN Climate Change Conference, the upcoming WTO negotiations, and the ambitious Trade and Investment Enhancement Agreement (TIEA). Among other topics, they touched on border security, the forthcoming London Conference on Afghanistan in Jan. 2006, as well as the elections in Haiti. "Canada and the EU welcomed the formation of the Government of National Unity in Sudan as a significant and historic step towards peace in that country," reads the leaders' joint statement, adding that they will work multilaterally on reconciling ongoing issues in the Middle East, Iran, and preparations for an Avian flu pandemic.
