Smokers Need Not Apply

Published: Wednesday, 12/07/2005 12:00 am EST

The World Health Organization has decided to stop hiring smokers in an attempt to practice what it preaches with its anti-tobacco campaign. Potential employees filling out a job application to the WHO will be asked whether they are smokers and if so, whether they will stop smoking. Current employees who smoke cigarettes are being encouraged to kick the habit, though the agency says it will not investigate its employees to discover whether they are currently lighting up. The WHO, the United Nation's health agency, announced the action on Dec. 2 in Geneva, which it says is motivated on matters of principle, since it cannot force UN member states to respect international anti-tobacco laws.
