Iran Protest

About 30 students from two Jewish student groups from Montreal and Toronto protested outside the Iranian Embassy on Metcalfe St. on Jan. 26 calling for sanctions against Iran and its expulsion from the UN. The demonstration came on the eve of the International Day of Commemoration of All Holocaust Survivors. Rabbi Reuben Poupko spoke on behalf of the students saying the protest was also organized to denounce Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's remarks denying the holocaust ever occurred. "No one in the civilized world can rest easy at the prospect of a country like this which has supported terror and has proclaimed it, and is on the verge of buying nuclear weapons," said Rabbi Poupko, who added that officials from the embassy declined to meet them. Responding to a query from Embassy, an official from the embassy said he had no comment to make. "This is a free country, everybody can express themselves," said the official who requested anonymity.
