More Green Is Less Green

The British Columbia City of Richmond, near Vancouver, is sending a letter to the federal Department of International Trade in Ottawa stating its opposition to a proposed surtax on imported bicycles. According to the Richmond Review, The Canadian International Trade Tribunal is recommending a 20 to 30 per cent surtax on imported bicycles with a retail value of $400 or less in an attempt to protect domestic bicycle manufacturers. However, the City of Richmond is concerned that such measures would not only result in higher prices for low-cost bikes, but also it would discourage people from using bicycles as a cheaper and more environmentally-friendly method of transportation, not to mention as a source for physical activity.
