Canada and Human Rights

News that the UN General Assembly has elected Canada as a member of the new Human Rights Council comes on the heels of a recent report by the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights finding that Canada has failed to live up to an international treaty protecting people's rights when it comes to poverty, homelessness, health care and education. The report noted that "some situations [in Canada] had actually got worse" since Canada's record was last examined in 1998.
