Cutlery Outcry

Published: Wednesday, 05/10/2006 12:00 am EDT

The Canadian Embassy in Makati City, Philippines, was the site of demonstrations in support of a Filipino boy in Montreal who was allegedly scolded last month by his school for eating with a fork and spoon, instead of a fork and knife "like a Canadian." Joseph Brillantes, the Philippines's Ambassador to Canada, says the incident is "an affront to Filipino culture," and that the embassy is pursuing the case. His Canadian counterpart in Manila, Peter Sutherland, says it's an "atypical and isolated incident" that shouldn't hurt bilateral relations.
