Layton's Request

Published: Wednesday, 07/19/2006 12:00 am EDT

NDP leader Jack Layton yesterday said Prime Minister Stephen Harper should answer call for an immediate cease-fire in Lebanon, including the withdrawal of Israeli forces and the cessation of attacks and incursions by Hezbollah and Hamas on Israel. Mr. Layton criticized Mr. Harper for saying it is too early to send an international peacekeeping force to the region. He said Canada should contribute troops to a UN peacekeeping force called for by Kofi Annan and develop a plan for humanitarian relief for civilians caught in the conflict.
