Give Peace a Chance

Published: Wednesday, 08/02/2006 12:00 am EDT

As talks between the Ugandan government and rebel Lord's Resistance Army continue in South Sudan, Uganda's High Commissioner to Canada Cissy Taliwaku said her government is committed to peace, but warned neighbouring countries against allowing their territory to be used as a launch pad for attacking the east African country. Ms. Taliwaku says Uganda has asked the International Criminal Court to hold off on exercising arrest warrants against rebel leader Joseph Kony in order to give peace a chance. Ms. Taliwaku said the Congolese Army is too weak to control the rebels, who are now based in the D.R.C., and urged for UN peacekeeping force there to be strengthened.
