Security Seat for Panama

Panama has been elected to a UN Security Council seat after 48 rounds of voting. It emerged as a compromise candidate for a seat, which was hotly contested by Venezuela and Guatemala. Both countries withdrew from the race, paving the way for Panama's election. The U.S., which had strongly opposed Venezuela's candidacy, said it would ratify Panama's election.
