New RCMP Commissioner

William J.S. Elliott has been appointed the new commissioner for the RCMP, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced last week. Mr. Elliott is a lawyer and an expert in national security. Until last week he was the associate deputy minister of public safety. He had also served as national security advisor to prime minister Paul Martin, and was deputy commissioner of the Canadian Coast Guard from 1998-2000. Mr. Elliott will begin his duties on July 16.
