Canada was one of 22 countries observing the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership meeting in Vienna on Sept. 16, a Foreign Affairs spokeswoman said, but was not one of the 16 nations that joined the growing bloc. "Canada has been invited to join this international partnership," DFAIT spokeswoman Eugenie Cormier-Lassonde said. "The government is carefully considering this invitation, which will be announced at a later date." There had been concern Canada would join the controversial U.S.-led group, which is promoting nuclear energy as a way to curb greenhouse gas emissions and prevent nuclear weapons proliferation.
