Contradictions Over China

While the Harper government has repeatedly criticized the state of democracy and human rights in China since coming to power last year, Canadian diplomats in Beijing have reported China is making "incremental progress" in human rights and will likely continue making "steady forward movement," the Globe and Mail reports. Foreign Affairs deputy minister Len Edwards was in the Chinese capital for three days last week to conduct "a series of internal consultations" at the Canadian embassy and did not meet with any Chinese officials.
