Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion submitted his party's recommendations on how Canada should proceed with the Afghanistan mission yesterday. The submission was made to the independent panel chaired by former Liberal minister John Manley, which will soon recommend a path forward for Canada in Afghanistan. Mr. Dion said Canada must "remain engaged" in Afghanistan, and that moving out of combat missions "does not represent an abandonment of Afghanistan." Mr. Dion also called for a "NATO-wide solution" to prevent the torture of Afghan detainees. The Liberal leader also stressed the importance of ensuring that the Canadian Forces are able to deploy elsewhere in the world while the mission continues.
