Canada Backs Sanctions

Published: Wednesday, 03/05/2008 12:00 am EST

Canada supports the new UN Security Council sanctions against Iran for failing to suspend its nuclear activities, including uranium enrichment and spent fuel reprocessing activities, Foreign Affairs Minister Maxime Bernier said in a statement Monday. "Iran must also take steps to fully rebuild confidence that its nuclear program is exclusively for peaceful purposes by, among other things, implementing the Additional Protocol to its Safeguards Agreement, pursuant to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty," he said. The new sanctions include a travel ban for targeted Iranian officials, a freeze of assets of newly designated Iranian firms, and a call for governments to withdraw financial support for trade with Iran.
