Seal Ban Looms

Canadian sealers are waiting for an external study, commissioned by the European Union, expected to be released later this month. The study on the socioeconomic effects of a ban on Canadian seal products will precede a decision by the 27-nation bloc on whether to ban imports of the animal products. "We're always concerned because when you get others doing reports, of course you have no idea what's going to be in it," Fisheries Minister Loyola Hearn told the Canadian Press this week. The Canadian seal hunt typically starts in late March or early April.
