Opposition to Taiwan Referendum

A March 22 referendum in Taiwan that will ask the island's citizens whether they want to join the UN as Taiwan instead of the Republic of China "needlessly escalates tensions" with mainland China, Foreign Affairs Minister Maxime Bernier said in a speech to Asian heads of mission last week. Mr. Bernier also re-affirmed Canada's commitment to a one-China policy, but encouraged the two sides to reach a negotiated settlement on Taiwan's status. The Chinese foreign ministry applauded Mr. Bernier's speech.
