Arctic Sovereignty Mission

This coming Sunday, the Canadian Forces will wrap up one of three annual "sovereignty missions" to Canada's High Arctic, Operation Nunalivut '08. According to the Department of National Defence, this year's operation includes air surveillance and Canadian Ranger patrols along the west coast of Ellesmere Island between Eureka and Canadian Forces Station Alert—the northernmost permanent settlement in the world. The forces are also helping International Polar Year scientists to conduct research of the on the Ellesmere Island ice shelves. The mission is overseen by Joint Task Force (North), which reports to Canada Command in Ottawa.
