China Stymies Tibet Visit

Published: Wednesday, 04/09/2008 12:00 am EDT

Diplomats visiting the Tibetan capital of Lhasa were prohibited by Chinese authorities from having any contact with locals and people imprisoned after last month's unrest, the Globe and Mail reported. A Canadian diplomat was one of the 17 from 15 countries who were taken on a 20-hour visit. Chinese officials leading the group assured them that the Tibetan monks who protested during a media visit the week before would not be punished. A spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs said the Canadian government was disappointed diplomats were not permitted to have unsupervised conversations with Tibetans.
