Claiming the Arctic

Intent on claiming the rights to large sectors of the Arctic and Atlantic Ocean seabed before a UN convention 2013 deadline, the Conservative government announced it will double spending on scientific research projects to $40 million over four years, the National Post reported last week. The government hopes the research will prove that the North American continental shelf, which could contain billions of dollars worth of resource reserves, extends beyond Canada's 200-nautical mile limit.
