New Imam for Ottawa

Published: Wednesday, 07/16/2008 12:00 am EDT

Khalid Abdul-Hamid Syed, 33, has been named Ottawa's new imam by the Egyptian government following a 15-month search for a replacement for Gamal Solaiman, the Ottawa Citizen reported. The paper cited an email to community leaders in the city as saying Imam Syed "is qualified and trained to serve in an English-speaking community." The new imam is married and has a young child. He is expected to arrive in September, in time for Ramadan.
