Canadian officals have finally been given access to a Canadian citizen who has been locked up in an Ethiopian jail since January 2007, the Toronto Star reported. On Friday, Foreign Affairs officials met with Bashir Makhtal, a former Torontonian who was arrested in December 2006 on the border between Kenya and Somalia. In June, Ethiopian officials in Ottawa said Mr. Makhtal was charged with being a member of a rebel separatist group with ties to al-Qaeda. Canadian lawyer Lorne Waldman is calling on Ottawa to pressure Eithiopia for his release.
