Obama to Surge

Published: Wednesday, 07/23/2008 12:00 am EDT

If he becomes president, Barack Obama said the United States will fight terrorism "with vigor" and press for a troop "surge" in Afghanistan, CTV News reported. The comments were made in a meeting with Afghan President Hamid Karzai during the U.S. presidential candidate's trip to the country last week, according to an Afghan official. Mr. Obama has been critical of Mr. Karzai in the past for not doing enough to improve the security and political situation in the country. But Mr. Obama said he would call for two or three additional brigades, about 7,000 more U.S. troops, to fight in Afghanistan if elected president.
