Passport Demand To Soar

Published: Wednesday, 07/23/2008 12:00 am EDT

Passport Canada is preparing to be flooded with passport applications over the next year in advance of more stringent U.S. border rules taking effect on June 1, 2009, the CBC reported. Passport Canada expects it will see 5.2 million applications before March 31, 2009, an increase of 10 per cent over the previous, record-breaking year. Changes to the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, WHTI, and new rules for travellers into the U.S. entering by land and water are causing the increase.
