Water Program Axed

The axing of a Canadian-led UN international water quality monitoring program has the Sierra Club questioning the motives behind the government's decision. Sierra Club national water campaigner Celeste Côté said it suggests the government "does not take water seriously, either as a domestic issue or an international concern." A five-year trust fund worth $1.5 million expired last year and was not renewed due to a lack of funding. An Environment Canada spokesman said the program is "not a priority."
