This year, Canada's mission in Afghanistan could cost some $331 million more than expected, Sun Media reported. In the government's 2008-2009 supplementary estimates, the estimated cost of the mission rose from $516 million to $848 million, an increase of 64 per cent. Defence Minister Peter MacKay's spokesman, Dan Dugas, said the extra money is for extra ammunition, equipment repair, overhauls and engineering support. "This is money...required to protect our men and women in uniform doing a dangerous job for us," Mr. Dugas said.
