Portugal Offer on Gitmo

Published: Wednesday, 12/17/2008 12:00 am EST

Portugal announced last week that it is willing to resettle detainees being held at Guantanamo Bay and pressed other nations to do the same, the New York Times reported. It is the first sign other countries might help President-elect Barack Obama to close down the detention centre in Cuba. In a letter to European Union countries, Portugal's foreign minister Luis Amado wrote "we should send a clear signal of our willingness to help the U.S. government in that regard." Canada's government has not said it will resettle detainees, though all opposition parties have repeatedly called for the repatriation of Omar Khadr, the 21-year-old Canadian detained there since 2002.
