U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said strict new border rules are not meant to single out Canada for especially harsh scrutiny, the Toronto Star reported. As of June 1, all Canadian and American citizens will require passports or special driver's licences at land crossings. Ms. Clinton said the U.S. is proud to share a long and peaceful border with Canada, but that the current "security environment" means the U.S. must focus on making its northern border as secure as possible. "Americans are worried about every port and point of entry. I don't think we have any lesser concerns about any other route in to our country than any other one," she said.
